Time for Career Strategy as well as Financial Strategy

Time for Career Strategy as well as Financial Strategy I responded to a recent question on LinkedIn.com Whats your biggest concern with regards to the US Financial Market crisis? I think it was aimed at people managing money on Wall Street but I felt the need to expand the focus. Heres my response:My biggest concern is that people react to the situation rather than proactively strategizing what it means to their careers. In every challenge there are opportunities especially if you are positioned to take advantage of them. We are witnessing a fundamental change in Wall Street that will impact Main Street. The sooner people focus their attention on planning their career strategy, the sooner they can implement those plans and stay ahead despite any adverse changes in the economy.Im not trying to scare anyone. Im merely pointing out that reacting to change is not an effective career strategy. Knowledge truly is power.Get in the know about the impact to your career:Assess the impact to your employer. Did your employer lose clients or revenue due to the Wall Street shake-up? If so, will cost reductions need to follow to keep the business profitable? What ideas might you offer up to save the company money and perhaps save jobs? Assess the impact to your industry. Is demand in your industry likely to grow even if people curb their spending? Are the products and services produced by the industry something people cant live without or are they more of a luxury? Consider making contacts in growing industries such as healthcare, green power, oil and gas. Use your university alumni network to do informational interviews and understand how your skills can transfer. Assess your performance and contribution. Are you known by your manager as a top performer? Do clients love working with you? Theres always room for the best of the best. Are you a revenue generator for the company? If not, what might you do to adjust your job to bring in revenue so youre not viewed as an expense?I welcome your questions, comments and responses to the se assessments. What impacts are you seeing (or do you anticipate) in your job, employer or industry? What outcomes are you working to create or would you like to create? What do you feel is a good career strategy given your situation? If youre not sure, email me at coaching@maggiemistal.com for an assessment of your current situation and what you can do to strategically manage your career.

The Insight About Executive Resume Writing

The Insight About Executive Resume Writing Simply listing out your career accomplishments and highlighting your experiences on an executive resume isn’t enough to get recognized today. In a way, writing resumes that get you hired is all about how you display the information and what keywords you use, no matter how experienced you actually are. You generally only have about six seconds to impress a recruiter with your resume. And that’s assuming you’ve already passed the automated trackers using the right keywords to even get your resume in the hands of the recruiter. Here are some insider tips about executive resume writing you may find useful. Unused Keywords and Basic Formatting Issues Can Hurt You One of the keys to writing resumes that get you hired is using the right keywords throughout the resume. The best way to find these keywords is to look directly at the job description or the list of requirements from the job posting. Identify certain keywords from those places and use them early and often in your resume. Another aspect that can make or break you is not using the best executive resume format. Use should use bullet points, bold text and indentations to your advantage to make the resume look clean. No one likes to spend a lot of time reading a resume, so the fewer words you can use to get your accomplishments highlighted, the better off you’ll be. Many Companies Use an Applicant Tracking System The main reason why keywords are so important today is many companies use an applicant tracking system to filter through resumes. Any given job posting could generate thousands of applicants. The only way a recruiter can narrow them down efficiently is to use technology to identify certain keywords. If your resume doesn’t have the keywords they are looking for, it won’t even make the cut to be looked at by human eyes. Professional Writing and Feedback is Critical Receiving objective feedback is important when writing resumes that get you hired. You can get feedback from family, friends, colleagues or even professional executive resume writers. A professional resume writing service can look at a job description, identify the keywords and incorporate them into your resume to optimize it as much as possible. Professional Resume Services is here to help executives by providing services from some of the top professional executive resume writers. Whether you need to start from scratch with your executive resume, or if you only need a final proofread, we are here to help you. PayPal Kills North Carolina Expansion Due to Anti-LGTBQ Law

PayPal Kills North Carolina Expansion Due to Anti-LGTBQ Law Two weeks ago, PayPal announced that it was going to open a new global operations center in Charlotte, N.C., adding 400 skilled jobs to the city’s economy in the process. Today, however, the company canceled its plans, citing a new law in the state that “perpetuates discrimination and … violates the values and principles that are at the core of PayPal’s mission and culture” as the reason. The North Carolina law, passed in late March, required government-owned buildings to make bathrooms single-sex only. For people transgender people, this is a huge problemâ€"complying with the rule would effectively be a nonconsensual outing process that can easily lead to further discrimination and harassment, and disobeying the law could lead to unsafe confrontation in addition the baseline discomfort of using a bathroom that doesn’t align with your gender. “The law also excludes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from anti-discrimination protections, and blocks municipalities from adopting their own anti-discrimination and living wage rules,” the Associated Press reported. Companies like Apple, Bank of America, and Facebook have moved swiftly to denounce the law, and loudly. PayPal, however, has taken things a step further. In a statement issued Tuesday, the company indicated that the law was contrary to the company’s values, and that it was compelled to cancel its plans. “Becoming an employer in North Carolina, where members of our teams will not have equal rights under the law, is simply untenable,” Dan Schulman, PayPal’s President and CEO, wrote in the statement. “While we will seek an alternative location for our operations center, we remain committed to working with the LGBT community in North Carolina to overturn this discriminatory legislation, alongside all those who are committed to equality,” wrote Schulman.

Video Cover Letter Would You Send One - Work It Daily

Video Cover Letter Would You Send One - Work It Daily A CAREEREALISM reader recently sent me the following note: Hello, I wanted to share a video with you I put together this week. The company (Carrot Creative) basically asked that you don't send over a boring cover letter and do something interesting that would get their attention and show your personality. I put together this stop-motion video using carrots and after about 12 hours of work and over 300 carrots, I came up with this. It's already received over 70 hits in the first 24 hours. With this job market you have to do the extra work to stand out from the rest of the applicants. It would be really helpful if you retweeted this or blogged about. Thank you in advance! So my fellow readers, what do you think? Would you invest the time and energy into creating a video cover letter like this and work to get it promoted on-line just for one job application? 3 Reasons Why This Was a Great Move I love Torrey's decision to do this video cover letter for 3 reasons: He responded to the challenge of the employer. He saw it as an opportunity to teach himself a new skill. He was brave enough to put it out there and ask for help to promote it. Even if Torrey doesn't get the job, I think he's gained a lot from this experience. I'd say it was a smart move on his part! It really sets him apart as a job seeker. What Can You Do to Respond to an Employer's Challenge? Most employers don't ask job seekers to get this creative. Torrey was applying for a job with a highly creative agency, so this makes sense. But, that doesn't mean you can't think outside the box and create something unique - as long as it is in alignment with the type of company you are applying to. For example, I don't see Torrey's video cover letter working with law or accounting firm, do you? That being said, I ask all of you: What can we do to be more original in our cover letters? Inside CareerHMO.com, we have a video tutorial that teaches members how to give cover letters a F.A.C.E. (Format, Attitude, Commonality and Experience) with some personality so the reader feels more connected to them. What do you do to make your cover letters more interesting? J.T. 3 Things I Wish I Told My Daughter When She Was a Teenager

3 Things I Wish I Told My Daughter When She Was a Teenager Our daughter graduated college six months ago. She is a functioning adult living on zu sich own in a city 300 miles away. Right now, I should be patting myself on the back for my contribution to raising her. But, instead, I keep thinking of all the things I wished Id instilled in her during her teenage years. Here are my top three.1. Tampons will change your life.I remember learning how to use ansicht when I was a teenager. It felt like a competition between me and the tampon. I finally got the hang of it, but it took a whole box and three periods to accomplish. Once I did, I never went back. The freedom The pride Our daughter played competitive volleyball, so I knew shed benefit but how do I approach the subject? Hand her an open box and the directions insert and say, Here, try unterstellung. Good luck? By the time I finally asked her if she wanted to learn how to use them, she told me one of her volleyball teammates beat m e to it. I feel like I missed a unique opportunity to bond.2. Just because you have a past doesnt mean you have a future. Our daughter, like most of us, wants to help people and doesnt want to disappoint anyone. Consequently, she attracted boyfriends that came and went and came back again. I saw her allow young men shed stopped seeing back into her life, only to end the relationships again. At the time, I figured thats just how puppy love works, plus she did leid welcome my interference in her love life. I wish Id taught her how to forgive but not forget. I wish Id thought to say getting back with a former flame is easy and comfortable, but if they hurt you mentally emotionally or physically, its best to let them go and not look back.3. Failure is not the end. Its the beginning.Im learning to code. Its normal for my scripts to fail, because trial and error is part of the process. Ive discovered trial and error is a useful tool in many areas of life. I wish Id had this perspective wh en our daughter was a teenager. I wish Id asked, What did we learn from this? more often than, Why did you do that? Teenagers are supposed to fail. Theyre experiencing situations (driving, getting jobs, falling in love) for the first time. I wish Id framed these as life lessons to teach instead of situations that inconvenienced me. I missed opportunities to help her identify triggers that made her choose the way she did, and ask her how she thought she could avoid making the same mistake again. ??Dont get me wrong I feel good about what I did manage to tell my daughter when she was a teenager. I just hope I live long enough to tell the above three things to my future granddaughters.
